Kate Greenaway’s Children

Who would have thought that an illustrator of children’s books would influence children’s fashion?

Artist Kate Greenaway got her start creating illustrations for greeting cards, especially Valentine and Christmas cards. From there she became a popular illustrator of children’s book. She also published collections of her illustrations.

People were so taken with the way Kate Greenaway dressed the children in her illustrations that they wanted to dress their children the same way and ‘Greenaway children’ became a fashion trend in the late 19th century. Usually we use art to trace fashion trends; this is an example of art creating trends!
