I like to think of myself as a Knowledge Explorer. Arts in Letters combines my love of learning about the people who made history through their own words, with my desire to share what I learn, hopefully creating something that brings fun and enjoyment in every weekly installment!

As a graduate student in music, I did my fair share of research. I loved it! To me, research was like a treasure hunt; I never knew what I’d find and sometimes I struck gold! I was especially thrilled when I found personal letters written by or to my research subjects, the ultimate primary sources.

These letters provided insight into the personalities of my subjects, and information about their work and lives that biographies written by other people, couldn’t. I loved learning about people’s lives through their own words and thought there had to be others who shared that love. The idea for Arts in Letters was born.

From my initial idea to focus on musicians the idea expanded to include writers and artists, and then scientists were added to the mix and the concept of the Grand SLAM was born. Science, Literature, Art and Music. (Excuse the use of a baseball term, but it’s catchy and I like it!) So much of humanity’s creative work has been done in these four fields, there’s a rich reservoir of knowledge to explore.

So, this is the story behind Arts and Letters. Hope you want to join on the weekly journey through history with me! Any questions or suggestions, please send them on over to communications@artsinletters.com.
